Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
