The veteran actress delivers a masterful portrayal playing Elisabeth, an aging film star demoted to starring in an aerobics show on television. The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque story stars Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who takes a break from writing about global conflict to embark on an opulent ship accompanied by a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her spouse, as well as other filthy rich guests. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship one night and everyone denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Available now, Netflix

Presence

Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities in this clever supernatural story shot entirely from the viewpoint of a ghost. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their recent residence, the lens – representing the ghost – follows them around. The teen shows signs of sensing the supernatural presence, and it seems defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his cult stardom via this self-referential adventure. He portrays a narcissistic film star named Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to visit a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. October 11th, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Located in the late 70s in Denver, several child abductions has rendered the youth on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and locked up in a basement, he dreads a terrible outcome. However, the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, late evening, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation about the fallen religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor plays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, yet Jessica Chastain achieves to show the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, late night, Film4

Black Bag

This period's second offering from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as tight like the turtlenecks used by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission with uncovering a double agent within their ranks out of five possibilities – among them is his own wife. The two stars are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful mental battle of fact versus fiction unfolds. Additional actors participate the intelligent intelligence fun.
